Hunts Point Food Distribution Center

Bridging the Gap Between Large Scale Distribution and Small Scale Communities

The Hunts Point neighborhood, located just a five minute walk away from the Food Distribution Center, is considered to be in a food desert. How can we bridge the gap between the large scale distribution network and the small scale communities that exist nearby? Can we design a more localised system that creates access points for individuals to tap into the abundance the market provides? This project responds to the current public health crises of Hunts Point by designing a “Greenway Market,” which connects the isolated community to the Food Distribution Center and the communities beyond the Bruckner Expressway.

There is an estimated 13,000 Bodegas in NYC, and more than 1,100 grocery stores. Most if not all of these grocery stores get their produce from the Food Distribution Center at Hunts Point. As a result of the creation of the Bruckner Expressway in the late 1960s, the neighborhood of Hunts Point became isolated, and no longer had easy access to the produce, schools, and parks on the other side of this six lane highway. The 70s, characterized by building burnings and prostitution, and the 80s, noted as the crack epidemic, were clear repercussions of Moses’s change of the landscape. Today, Hunts Point is known as one of the top 10 most dangerous places in NYC.
